| Morning Sun, Melbourne December 17, 1998 Waco: A Senseless Tragedy
This is not exactly friendly Christmas-style fare, I know. But it is one of the strongest, most confronting documentaries to gain a release in Australia for quite some time. Director William Gazecki and producer Dan Gifford rake over the evidence left behind by the tragic siege of Waco, Texas, in early 1993. What they discover paints a contrasting picture to the reports that were spoon-fed to the world media by various agencies of the US Government. The message sent out by the Oscar-nominated Waco: The Rules of Engagement is simple. They fought the law and the law won, but what a hollow victory. The prolonged stand-off between the FBI and David Koresh's Branch Davidians should never have ended the way it did at Waco. By combining chilling on-the-spot footage with the shameless cover-ups later unveiled at various congressional hearings, this grimly compelling film will leave viewers shaking their heads at the injustice and lying that brought about this sorry debacle. Eighty seven men, women and children died in the fiery inferno that ended the siege, an exercise that started 51 days earlier as a PR appearance for firearms agents looking to justify their existence. One can only hope that a film as eloquently damning as this keeps everyone with blood on their hands awake at night. |
