Docu Assn. Taps Noms

Judges for the International
Documentary Association have nominated 25 documentaries ranging from feature-length
films to short subjects for the IDA's 1997 Distinguished Achievement Awards.
Five awards will be given.
Winners will be honored October 31st at the 13th annual IDA Awards Gala,
to be held at the Ritz-Carlton Huntington Hotel in Pasadena.
Feature nominees include "Mandela," directed by Angus Gibson
and Jo Menell and produced by Jonathan Demme and Menell; "Sick: The
life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist," produced and directed
by Kirby Dick; "Waco: The Rules of Engagement,"
directed by William Gazecki and produced by Dan Gifford and Amy Sommer
Gifford.
Nominated short features include "Other People's Wars," produced
and directed by Michat Bukojemski; and "The Burning Barrel,"
produced and directed by Tim Schwab and Christina Craton.
Also nominated were: "Cadillac Desert" (PBS), directed by Jon
Else and produced by Sandy Itkoff and Else; and "The Burger &
the King" (BBCTV), directed by James Marsh and produced by Anthony
Wall. In all, there were 400 entries.
Two Distinguished Achievement Awards winners will be selected from the
feature-length category, one from the short category, one from the limited
series area and one from the strand category. Kodak has been sole sponsor
of the IDA achievement awards since their inception in 1984.
"Documentary filmmakers ...seldom get the recognition they deserve,"
Peggy Clark, television segment manager for Kodak's professional motion
imaging unit, said in a statement. "These awards are important because
they acknowledge the pursuit of excellence, and they are a source of inspiration
for every documentary filmmaker."
Winning docus also will be screened the day after the awards ceremony
at the IDA's DocuFest in the Bing Theater of the L.A. County Museum of
Art.
In a separate award, Ross Hawkins and the team of Jill Shinefield and
Gail Willumsen are the recipients of the 1997 IDA/Kodak Product Grant.
the grants provided a total of $8,000 worth of film stock for the filmmakers.
The IDA, a nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles, has approximately
